If you’re looking for a very nice genealogy research tool, you’re very well advised to give Gramps a try. This application offers a lot of functionality: it provides support for numerous languages, it comes with a user friendly interface, it puts loads of powerful functionality at your disposal, and it is free. It gives you all you need to manage your family tree.

Gramps is a cross-platform application, meaning that you can use it on a desktop machine powered by Windows, Mac, or Linux. To get the application up and running on a Windows PC, you will have to download an executable, run it, then follow the simple instructions a setup wizard presents. It must be mentioned that the first thing the wizard will ask you is to pick one of many, many supported languages.

When you launch Gramps, you will be presented with the family tree management prompt – it invites you to load an existing tree or get started with a new one. After that you will be presented with the Gramplets View which provides a bit of useful information about the application. You can switch from the Gramplets View to another type of view by using the buttons on the left hand side.

As mentioned above, Gramps offers a lot of functionality. Just take a look at its main features: create a detailed list of people, manage a list of locations, there’s an interactive map view that highlights locations, a person’s ancestry is displayed as a graphic representation, set up a list of families, manage photos, videos, and other media, enter any notes you want, list events. You have all the time in the world to uncover all the functionality provided by Gramps and, as I’ve already said, this is a free application (consider making a donation).

Gramps is a free, cross-platform, easy to use, and properly good genealogy research tool. I don’t see why you wouldn’t like it.

Pros

Gramps is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. The application provides support for numerous languages. There’s a customizable Gramplets view that comes in handy. Lots of powerful functionality for managing your family tree is offered for free.

Cons

None that I could think of.
